One of the legends of Tamil cinema, Shivaji Rao Gaekwad, popularly known by his stage name Rajinikanth, is also amongst the highest-paid actors in Asia. He is a megastar in the Tamil film industry from the 1970s.

Rajinikanth

He began his acting career in plays while working in the Bangalore Transport Service as a bus conductor in Bangalore, Karnataka. Rajinikanth has appeared in more than 160 films, mostly in the Tamil language. Rajinikanth has also worked in other language films such as Kannada, Malayalam, Telugu, and Bengali.

He mainly played supporting roles before becoming a lead actor. Rajinikanth married Latha Rangachari on 26 February 1981, in Tirupati, Andhra Pradesh. Rajinikanth has two daughters named Aishwarya Rajinikanth (born 1 January 1982) and Soundarya Rajinikanth (born 20 September 1984).

His elder daughter Aishwarya is married to actor Dhanush and they have two sons. Soundarya, his younger daughter, works as a director, producer and graphic designer in the Tamil film industry. She is married to industrialist Ashwin Ramkumar and a son named Ved Krishna. He first appeared in a Tamil drama Apoorva Raagangal (1975) directed by K. Balachander. He played his first lead role in Balachander’s Telugu drama film Anthuleni Katha (1976).

Rajinikanth got his first breakthrough in Tamil with Moondru Mudichu (1976) — also directed by K. Balachander. He acted in 15 films in the year 1977, playing negative characters in most of them, including Avargal, 16 Vayathinile, Aadu Puli Attam, and Gayathri. A few movies in which he had positive roles are Kavikkuyil, the Kannada film Sahodarara Savaal and the Telugu film Chilakamma Cheppindi.

Rajinikanth’s debut film in Malayalam was I. V. Sasi’s fantasy Allauddinum Albhutha Vilakkum (1979). In the year 1983, he made his Bollywood debut with Rama Rao Tatineni’s Andha Kanoon which was among the top-grossing Bollywood films of the year.

He won his first Filmfare Award for Best Tamil Actor for his role in Muthuraman’s Nallavanuku Nallavan (1984). Blockbuster hits of Rajinikanth include movies like the Suresh Krishna-directed Baashha, Padayappa (1999), Chandramukhi (2005), S. Shankar’s Sivaji (2007).

His dual role as a scientist and an andro humanoid robot, in the science fiction film Enthiran (2010) was India’s most expensive production at the time of its release. This movie is also among the highest-grossing Indian films of all time. He has also worked in the 2014 animated film Kochadaiiyaan, in which he played triple roles; the first in India to be shot with motion capture technology. Though it was a high budget movie, it was a commercial failure. Directed by Pa. Ranjith, the movie Kabali (2016) had the biggest weekend opening for an Indian film. Rajinikanth’s next movie Darbar is directed by AR Murugadoss and is planned to be released in 2020.

Rajinikanth is the recipient of the Padma Bhushan (2000) and the Padma Vibhushan (2016) for his contributions to the arts.
